Barton Creek
Southwest AustinMedian ~$3.0M
Upscale living and elite recreation: golf and large custom estates.
History
Barton Creek started in 1974 as a Ben Barnes and John Connally development with a country club, golf course and conference center. Freeport-McMoRan bought it in 1988 and proposed a 4,000-acre development, which turned into one of Austin's biggest environmental fights. That battle helped launch the Save Our Springs coalition, and voters passed the SOS ordinance protecting Barton Springs and the Edwards Aquifer.
Where it is
It sits south of FM 2244 (Bee Cave Road) about eight miles west of downtown in southwestern Travis County, roughly 15 to 20 minutes from downtown via MoPac. Neighboring Lost Creek shares the 78735 ZIP.
Living there
Gated custom estates are built around country-club golf courses, anchored by the Omni Barton Creek Resort and Spa. The Barton Creek Greenbelt and Barton Creek Square are close. Schools split between Eanes ISD and Austin ISD depending on the address, so check before you commit.
