Hyde Park
Central AustinMedian ~$800K
Just north of UT. Historic, highly walkable, quiet streets, close to campus and central amenities.
History
Hyde Park was platted in 1891 and marketed by Monroe Martin Shipe, whose streetcar line opened the same year to connect it to downtown. It is considered Austin's first suburb, and it was originally sold as a whites-only streetcar suburb, complete with an artificial lake. Before that the land held the Capital State Fair grounds with two racetracks.
Where it is
It runs from 38th Street to 45th Street and from Guadalupe to Duval, just north of the University of Texas, next to Hancock and North Loop. Part of it was listed as a National Register historic district in 1990, and it is now one of the densest parts of the urban core.
Living there
Queen Anne, Craftsman and Tudor Revival homes line the streets. Local landmarks include the Elisabet Ney Museum, Fire Station No. 9, a historic moonlight tower, Shipe Park and Pool, and Avenue B Grocery.
