Northwest Hills

Northwest AustinMedian ~$1.25M

A family standby for larger lots, mature trees and good schools while staying relatively close to central Austin.

History

Northwest Hills was founded in 1952 largely by the Barrow family, who drove much of Austin's northwest growth through the 1950s and 1960s. David Barrow Sr. pushed for MoPac, because before it existed residents had to drive to Lamar or even I-35 to get downtown. Subdivisions filled in between the 1950s and 1980s.

Where it is

It covers hilly land between MoPac and Lake Austin, mostly in ZIPs 78731 and 78759. Far West Boulevard is the main street, which is why some locals just call it Far West. Access to MoPac and Loop 360 makes it a commuter favorite.

Living there

Long, winding streets, deer sightings and hilltop views are part of the deal, along with brick and limestone ranch homes and some apartments. Green space includes the Lower Bull Creek Greenbelt and Stillhouse Hollow Nature Preserve, and Mount Bonnell sunsets are close.
