Zilker

South Central AustinMedian ~$1.49M

South of the river and the center of the outdoor and festival scene, with Zilker Park and Barton Springs at the doorstep.

History

In 1918 Andrew Jackson Zilker deeded 35 acres around Barton Springs to the City of Austin, and the first homes in the neighborhood went up in the late 1920s. Much of the west end was owned by Vincent Canizzo until the late 1940s, when the city used eminent domain to acquire the land where Zilker Elementary now sits; the rest became the Canizzo Subdivision.

The park next door

Zilker Metropolitan Park is Austin's oldest metropolitan park at more than 350 acres. It holds Barton Springs Pool, Zilker Botanical Garden, the Austin Nature and Science Center, the Hillside Theater and the Umlauf Sculpture Garden, and it hosts Austin City Limits, the Trail of Lights and the ABC Kite Festival.

Where it is

The neighborhood runs south of Lady Bird Lake, bounded roughly by the Union Pacific tracks, Barton Skyway, and Rabb and Azie Morton Roads. Barton Hills sits just to the northwest and links back through the Barton Creek Greenbelt. Matt's El Rancho is one of the long-running local landmarks.
