I still don't understand the obsession with grackles here. In San Jose we just had crows and nobody made costumes out of them. Is there a local historical reason for it or is it just an inside joke?

That reminds me of seeing people on OneWheels in Campbell back in South Bay. Yesterday at The Domain I saw someone walking two blue heelers while listening to a podcast on giant retro headphones. Is that pretty common around here? EDIT: Not sure why this is getting downvoted, I was just asking a genuine question about neighborhood vibes.

- Scorpions inside the house this summer and what actually works
Is it normal to have scorpions inside residential homes here? Back in San Jose we had black widows occasionally, but having scorpions inside a modern suburban house feels wild to me. We definitely had way less scorpions in California. I bought a blacklight like Hank suggested and found three near my patio in The Domain. EDIT: Not sure why people are downvoting a genuine question? Just trying to adjust to living here.

EDIT: Wow, didn't mean to trigger people by mentioning San Jose. I love Austin and I'm really trying to make this my home, but the cost of living at The Domain hasn't dropped while the job market seems to have hit a wall. Service industry jobs sound honest but they won't cover my rent here. Are there any senior software role openings that don't require pivoting to defense?

Is it just me or has the local job market completely stalled out? I moved out to The Domain in 2021 working remotely for a tech company in Sunnyvale, but my company had a round of layoffs last month. I have been applying to local Austin tech companies for three weeks now and barely getting callbacks. Back in San Jose, recruiters were constantly sliding into my inbox. Is anyone actually hiring right now or is the entire city frozen?

Honestly water access here in August is super tough compared to Northern California where you can just drive to the coast. Have you guys tried swimming in Town Lake near the boardwalk? Or is that not allowed? It looks really accessible on Google Maps.
