Best spots to actually get in the water in August without fighting a thousand people

   Hi everyone, sorry if this gets asked every summer! My family and I moved here from Chicago last year, and this August heat is really hitting us hard. We tried going to Barton Springs last Saturday around 11 AM and the line was clear around the block. Is there anywhere in the area where you can comfortably get in the water on a weekend without fighting massive crowds? We are willing to drive 30 to 45 minutes if needed.

   First piece of advice is to completely forget about the Campbell access point or Twin Falls on the Greenbelt right now. The creek is bone dry by August. If you want a sanity-saving option, try Deep Eddy Pool right when they open at 6 AM, or head over to Jessica Hollis Park below Mansfield Dam. The water there comes out from the bottom of Lake Travis so it is ice cold, clear, and stays relatively calm early in the day.

   If you have kayaks or paddleboards, sunrise on Lady Bird Lake is the absolute best option!!! You avoid the midday heat and all the rental crowds. The water near Red Bud Isle is quiet early in the morning. Just make sure to keep your dogs out of the water due to the blue-green algae warnings!

   Honestly water access here in August is super tough compared to Northern California where you can just drive to the coast. Have you guys tried swimming in Town Lake near the boardwalk? Or is that not allowed? It looks really accessible on Google Maps.

   First of all, it is Lady Bird Lake! Please do not call it Town Lake! Second, swimming is strictly prohibited in Lady Bird Lake by city ordinance due to sub-surface hazards and water quality issues! You can paddle on it, but you absolutely cannot swim in it!

   Main lake is packed with ski boats on weekends. Head out to Pace Bend Park instead. Launch early off the rocky ledges. Water depth drops fast off the cliffs. Good fishing under the shade trees too. 🐟

   Keep your lines tight and your water levels high.

   Just clsoed down the prep table at 1am and my shirt is soaked. Man August in a mobile kitchen is brutal. If I get a break between morning prep and the night rush I hit Krause Springs out in Spicewood. Costs a few bucks to get past the gate but the tree canopy keeps it shaded and it never feels as packed as Zilker.

   Come try the brisket taco special this weekend!

   EDIT: Okay sorry for using the old name earlier, I literally read it on a local blog from a few years ago! Appreciate the clarification on the no-swimming rule, I definitely do not want a ticket.

    Krause Springs is a fantastic call by Tico, just remember it is cash only at the gate so plan ahead. Another solid option is driving down to San Marcos and getting in at Sewell Park or Rio Vista Park. The San Marcos River stays 72 degrees year round and moves steadily so it stays very clean.

    Thank you all so much for these detailed suggestions! I really appreciate the warnings about the Greenbelt being dry and the clarification about Lady Bird Lake. We are going to try Deep Eddy early this weekend and maybe plan a day trip out to Krause Springs next week. Everyone on this forum is so helpful!
