First hog hunt near Austin, where should I actually book?

   Moved out here last year and I keep hearing that hogs are a year round thing with no bag limit, which honestly still sounds made up to me. I have never hunted anything bigger than dove. I do not own a rifle yet either. What is the realistic way to book a first hog hunt within an hour or so of Austin? Day hunt, night hunt, guided, I have no idea what I am picking between. Budget is flexible but I am not trying to drop a mortgage payment on my first try.

   Not a dumb question. Feral hogs are invasive here, the population is enormous, and that is exactly why most ranches run them year round with no limits. That is the one part of Texas hunting that actually is as loose as it sounds. For a first timer within thirty minutes of town, Storm Ranch out in Dripping Springs is the easy answer. Free range but managed. They run 24 hour access with three scheduled hunt times, morning, afternoon and night. You sit blinds over feeders and the feeders have motion sensor lights, so you are not guessing in the dark your first time out. Access is around 300 a person per day, hogs are unlimited and free, and they clean your animal for you. They rent guns too, which solves your rifle problem.

   Storm Ranch is twenty minutes from my mailbox. It is a fine first hunt. They throw in skeet and Tannerite shooting, which sounds like a gimmick until you realize a new hunter needs trigger time before he sits in a blind.

   Twenty five minutes out and worth every one.

   The gun rental part is what I needed to hear. Do people actually bring their own or is renting normal?

   Renting is normal for a first hunt and nobody is going to look at you sideways for it. One thing I will push you on though. Book a night hunt if you can. Hogs are mostly nocturnal, and in this heat they are almost entirely nocturnal. Daytime sits look pretty and produce nothing.

   Second the night hunt. If a package offers thermal or night vision, that is where the action is. Paying for a daylight sit in August and then complaining there were no hogs is a rite of passage I would rather you skip.

   Measure twice, cut once, call Frank if it leaks.

   Question since I am also new to this. Do you need a license if the ranch is private and the hogs are considered a nuisance? Back home the rules were different for basically everything.

   Yes. You need a valid Texas hunting license. Private land and nuisance status do not get you out of that. If you are visiting from out of state there is a non resident 5 day special hunting license. You buy it online from Texas Parks and Wildlife. Takes a few minutes. Do it before you drive out, not in the parking lot with one bar of service.

   Twenty five minutes out and worth every one.

   Third option nobody has said yet. Independence Ranch out in Waelder, about an hour southeast. That is the budget one. Groups, bachelor parties, guys going out solo, they take all of it. Walk and stalk, night hunts, and they have a swampy dark section they call the Honey Hole that is supposed to hold the big ones. Packages start around 149 for a three hour hunt, 250 for a full day, and they scale up to multi day with meals and lodging.

   Been here long enough to remember when Manor Rd was quiet.

    independence has a rustic lodge and an on site store for whatever gear you forgot, which is every trip for me they also do emergency meat hunts, that is a real thing they list

    Keep your lines tight and your water levels high.

    If you want the guided end of the spectrum instead of a self serve blind, look at Circle M Hunts. It is more of a full outfitter setup, customized to whether you are brand new or have done this fifty times. Their ground is flood bottoms and dense swamp, which is why the hogs stay put instead of cycling through. You pick your style, one on one spot and stalk, box or tree stand, or guided thermal at night.

    Termidor SC is the only real barrier. PM me for spray schedules.

    Circle M is also the one to call if you are weapon particular. They will run you with an AR platform, a vintage WWII rifle, or traditional archery, which is rarer than people think. Most places hear the word recurve and get very quiet. They have a traditional Texas lodge and a 20 acre lake on the property with bass in it, so there is something to do between hunts instead of sitting in a truck.

    bass lake between hunts is the correct way to run a two day trip, i will say that much

    Disagree slightly with the crowd here. For a first timer I would not book a multi day package anywhere. Do the cheap short hunt first, find out whether you actually like sitting still in the dark, then spend money. The three hour option at Independence exists for exactly that reason.

    Twenty five minutes out and worth every one.

    Fair. Cheap first trip, then decide. My order for you would be Storm Ranch night sit if you want the easiest possible first outing with a rental gun and cleaning handled, Independence if you want the lowest cost and do not mind the drive to Waelder, Circle M if you want a guide walking you through it one on one.

    This is a lot more useful than what I was finding on my own. Going to grab the license this week and start with a night sit, then report back. Appreciate everyone taking the time.
