First human West Nile case of the year confirmed in Travis County

   Austin Public Health confirmed the county's first human case of West Nile virus for 2026 on August 20. The resident sought medical care for symptoms and the case was confirmed from there. Officials also say 10 mosquito pools in Travis County have already tested positive this year, so it is actively circulating. Their guidance is the Four Ds. Avoid being outdoors at dusk and dawn, dress in long sleeves, use DEET repellent, and drain standing water. Warm regards, Helen

   Ten positive pools is the number people should be paying attention to, not the single human case. A few practical notes: * Drain means everything. Saucers under pots, tarps, wheelbarrows, kid pools, clogged gutters. * DEET is the labeled active ingredient in the guidance. Follow the label rate. * Dusk and dawn is when you get bit. Plan yard work around it.

   Good reminder. Long sleeves in August sounds miserable but the dusk and dawn part is easy enough to work around if you shift trail time earlier.

   Ugh. DH does the yard right at sunset every time and I cannot get him to stop. Any idea if this is countywide or one area? Asking because of the kids playing outside after dinner.

   What was released covers Travis County as a whole, including the 10 positive mosquito pools. I have not seen a neighborhood breakdown, so I would not guess at one.

   Walk your yard after it rains and dump every container you find. Bromeliads and any plant that cups water (Aechmea, Neoregelia) hold enough to breed in. DO NOT let a saucer sit full for a week in this heat. That is all it takes.

   Plant native, save water, stop volcano mulching.

   This comes around every year and every year people act surprised. Drain the water. That is the whole trick.

   Been here long enough to remember when Manor Rd was quiet.
