Free / cheap kid activities in August before school starts?

   August is coming up fast and i am already running out of ideas to keep my two boys entertained before school starts back up. everything in this city costs a fortune now for a family of four. Are there any FREE or cheap kid friendly things going on in august that won't cost me $100 just to step out the door? outdoor stuff is fine if there's shade, but august heat is no joke. thanks in advance!

   Good luck avoiding the heat in august. it is going to be 105 every single day. If you want free, check out the central texas custom bicycle festival on saturday august 1st. starts at noon over at the south austin recreation center on cumberland rd. free and open to the public. they have custom lowrider bikes, scale models, vintage strollers, live music, bicycle swap meet. my kids loved looking at the lowriders a few years back.

   Rec center parking is going to be a total nightmare if you show up right at noon. 1100 Cumberland Road is right off South Congress area and those side streets fill up instantly. Plan on walking a few blocks in 100 degree heat with hot pavement. Bring strollers.

   The express lane is a toll on your patience too.

   Vintage strollers at a bike festival? okay that is actually pretty cool. do they have food there or do we need to pack a cooler?

   Another free one for the kids is the Road to Lone Star Le Mans Racing Fanfest on Saturday August 15th at Branch Park Pavilion. It is up in Mueller (2201 Aldrich Street), starts at 10:00 AM. Free and family friendly. They have Le Mans race car displays, racing simulators, live pit stop demonstrations, and prize giveaways. Branch Park has good space to run around too.

   Migas, flour, no salsa needed.

   Simulators and pit stop demos will be a massive hit with boys. Get there right at 10 AM before the sun bakes the pavement at Branch Park. Mueller traffic on Saturday morning isn't terrible but parking by the pavilion can get tight if there's a farmers market or another event spilling over.

   Protest every year. Every single year.

   The Asian American Resource Center on Cameron Road is doing MODERN: A 2-Day Vietnamese American Festival on Friday August 7th. Says it starts at 6:00 PM at 8401 Cameron Rd. Live music performances, fashion shows, community exhibits, vietnamese american culture. Good local culture night for the family.

   Been here long enough to remember when Manor Rd was quiet.

   6pm start on a friday night for a culture festival is way too late for little kids IMO. bedtime meltdown city. my 5yo is a pumpkin by 7:30. plus cameron road at 5:30 on a friday? no thank you.

   The express lane is a toll on your patience too.

   Kids these days need to build some character. back in my day we sat in the heat and didn't complain. The bike show at south austin rec is solid though. good people.

   Twenty five minutes out and worth every one.

    Thank you all so much!! adding the bicycle festival on aug 1 at noon and the racing fanfest on aug 15 at 10am to our calendar right now. both sound perfect for my boys and saving money before back to school shopping is huge. will definitely pack tons of water and ice towels for the heat!
